A Word on Sex Crimes
Sex crimes are broken down into several categories:
- Unlawful sexual activity with minors (statutory rape)
- Lewd or lascivious offenses (molestation, conduct, or exhibition)
- Sexual battery (rape)
Each sex crime has its own penalty that must be served in addition to the criminal punishment. While these can vary, there are some penalties every sex offender must adhere to. All sex offenders must follow sexual offender registration laws as governed by the state of Florida, and they must be placed on Sex Offender Probation. This probation dictates where sex offenders can live and work, mandates a curfew, and makes the offender attend counseling sessions.
There's also an additional proceeding called Jimmy Ryce Civil Commitment in which the State Attorney may have the offender serve additional imprisonment time at a commitment facility after the criminal sentence has been served.
